Thallium (Tl) Metal

Thallium (Tl) is a soft, silvery-white metal that tarnishes easily; its use is limited due to its toxicity. Thallium is very soft and malleable, inelastic, and heavy.

Typical Applications

The electronics industry uses thallium compounds in photoelectric cells to produce specialty glass to hasten received signals. Other common applications of thallium include, but are not limited to, acousto-optic laser equipment, hIgh-temperature superconductors, detection of gamma radiation, specialized temperature-extreme glasses, low-temperature thermometers, infrared light-sensitive photocells, and mercury lamps
