Platinum (Pt) Metal
Platinum is used for jewelry; however, its main use is in catalytic converters for cars, trucks, and buses, where it is very effective at converting emissions from the vehicle’s engine into less harmful waste products.
Platinum is used as a catalyst by the chemicals industry to produce nitric acid, silicone, and benzene and as a catalyst to improve the efficiency of fuel cells.
Other uses include the electronics industry to make computer hard disks and thermocouples, and to manufacture optical fibers and LCDs, turbine blades, spark plugs, pacemakers, and dental fillings.
