Lanthanum (La) Metal

Lanthanum (La) is one of the most reactive rare earth metals. It is silvery-white, soft, ductile, and malleable. It oxidizes rapidly when exposed to air and reacts with water temperature dependently. It burns easily when ignited.
Typical Applications

Lanthanum compounds make carbon arc lights. Its oxides are also used in making specialty glasses and optics. Lanthanum also is a large component, roughly 25%, of Misch metal. Its alloys store hydrogen gas in hydrogen-powered vehicles and batteries used in hybrid cars.
