Iridium (Ir) Metal

Iridium (Ir) is the most corrosion-resistant material. It is a silvery metal that is unreactive, dense and has a high melting point. It is hard and brittle, with low ductility making it difficult to machine, form, or work. It is mainly used in platinum alloys and a 90/10 platinum-iridium alloy for the standard kilogram mass.

Typical Applications

Iridium (Ir) is used in special alloys. It forms an alloy with osmium, used for pen tips and compass bearings. Another main use is as a hardening agent for platinum. It is also used for making crucibles and other equipment that operate at high temperatures, pivot bearings, scientific and other specialized equipment, and high-performance technically-advanced spark plugs for use in the automotive and aviation industries.
