Gadolinium is used in X-ray and MRI scanning systems and in control rods of nuclear reactors. It is also used for visual displays on television screens. It is used in magnets, specialty optics, and computer memory. It also has some metallurgical uses, with as little as 1% of gadolinium improving the workability and resistance of iron, chromium, and related alloys to high temperatures and oxidation.
