Germanium (Ge)

Germanium (Ge) is a silvery-white, bright, brittle semi-metal. It is a poor conductor of electricity, has a high index of refraction and dispersion, and is transparent to infrared radiation.

Typical Applications

Germanium is used in wide-angle camera lenses and objective lenses for microscopes which have become the major use for this element. Other current uses are fiber-optic systems, infrared optics, solar cell applications, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Germanium was used as a semiconductor in transistors and various other electronic devices.
