Zirconium Carbide (ZrC)

Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is an extremely hard refractory ceramic material that is a gray metallic powder with a cubic crystal structure. It has good high-temperature mechanical properties, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, a high melting point, and strong chemical resistance. Under irradiation, it demonstrates low neutron absorption cross-section and weak damage sensitivity.

Various standard granulations are available below 106 microns.

Purities: 99.0% & 99.5%
Typical Applications

“Zirconium carbide is used as an abrasive, in metal cladding, in cermets, incandescent filaments, and cutting tools. It is used as a coating, oxygen-gettering, or inert matrix material for advanced high-temperature nuclear applications and the coating of uranium dioxide and thorium dioxide particles of nuclear fuel.
Several new applications of zirconium carbide nanopowder are in hard alloy, nano-structured parts, and devices for the metallurgical, chemical, aerospace, energy, and aviation industry, as well as in new insulation thermostat textiles.”

Sustainable Qualities

Zirconium Carbide (ZrC) is a refractory ceramic material highly valued for its excellent mechanical and thermal properties. It is considered sustainable due to its long-lasting nature, meaning it can withstand high temperatures and wear without degrading, reducing the need for frequent replacements. ZrC is also known for its resistance to corrosion and oxidation, further increasing its durability and lifespan. Additionally, the production of ZrC typically involves the use of efficient and environmentally-friendly methods, such as chemical vapor deposition and carbothermal reduction, reducing its environmental impact. These factors make ZrC a sustainable choice for a variety of applications, particularly those that require high-performance materials with long lifetimes.

Moreover, ZrC is considered a sustainable material as it can contribute to the circular economy. ZrC can be recycled and reused in various applications due to its durability and resistance to degradation. Additionally, the production of ZrC typically involves the use of recycled or waste materials, such as zircon sand and Carbon black, further reducing its environmental impact and promoting resource efficiency. By choosing ZrC, industries can support the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy while still meeting their performance requirements.
