Tin(IV) Oxide (SnO₂)

Tin(IV) Oxide, or Stannic Oxide (SnO₂), is a naturally occurring white powder that is colorless, amphoteric, and diamagnetic. It is insoluble in water. It has a refractive index of 2.006.

Typical Applications

Tin(IV) Oxide is used as a pigment in the ceramic industry and as a polishing powder for glass and quarried rock, such as marble, granite, and quartz. It is used to coat glass, enhance the refractoriness of glass and glazes, and turn them from transparent to opaque white. It is also used in combustible gas sensors, including carbon monoxide detectors, semiconductors, photovoltaic materials, solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, and photocatalysts. Stannous Oxide is used as a catalyst with vanadium oxide for oxidation reactions of aromatic compounds into carboxylic acids and acid anhydrides. It also serves as a precursor in producing other, especially trivalent, tin compounds or salts.
