Spinel (MgAl₂O₄)
Spinel is a mineral composed of magnesium aluminate with a hardness of 8 on the Mohs Scale and specific gravity of 3.5–4.1. It is transparent to opaque with a vitreous to dull luster. Various impurities, such as iron, manganese, and chromium, impart different colors to the mineral.

Typical Applications
Spinel is used in electronics, composites, and pigments. “Ruby spinel” is a semi-precious gemstone. Synthetic spinel, which looks like glass and has a significantly higher strength against pressure, has both military and commercial applications.
