Silver Oxides (Silver(I) Oxide (Ag₂O) and Silver(II) Oxide (AgO))
Silver(II) Oxide (AgO), or silver peroxide, is a mixed oxidation state silver(I,III) oxide. It is a dark brown solid that decomposes with the evolution of O₂ in water. It is moisture and light-sensitive.
Purity: 99% to 99.5%
Silver(I) Oxide is used in silver-oxide batteries as a cathode material. In organic chemistry, silver(I) oxide is a mild oxidizing agent for aldehydes to produce carboxylic acids. It is also used for polishing glass, coloring glass yellow, as a catalyst, purifying drinking water, lab reagent, carbon dioxide scrubber, and chemical sensor.
Silver(II) oxide is a cathode material in silver oxide-zinc alkali batteries. It also has uses as a reagent in laboratory reactions and as a catalyst to prepare silver metal. Silver(II) Oxide is effective at absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and has uses in nuclear submarines, international space stations, and space vehicles. Other uses include manufacturing filters for gas sensors and infection-resistant surgical fabric materials. It also has an antimicrobial effect and is used in concrete and some swimming pools to protect the water.
