Nickel Carbonyl Ni(CO)₄

Nickel carbonyl (IUPAC name: tetracarbonylnickel) is a colorless and stable organometallic complex liquid at room temperature. Like all carbonyls, it is poisonous and extremely toxic. Its volatility at room temperature has earned the compound the nickname “liquid death.” Ni(CO)₄ decomposes to carbon monoxide and nickel metal on moderate heating and is the basis for the purification of nickel or plating onto surfaces.
Typical Chemical Properties

Nickel Carbonyl Powder Grade 255: (Bulk Density (G/cm3)= 0.5-0.65, APS (FSSS)= 2.2-2.8 microns, Typical Surface Area (BET)= 0.7)
Nickel Carbonyl Powder Grade 287 (Bulk Density= 0.75-0.95, APS= 2.6-3.3, Typical Surface Area= 0.6)
Nickel Carbonyl Powder Grade 123 (Bulk Density= 1.80-2.70, APS= 3.0-7.0, Typical Surface Area= 0.4)
Liquid carbonyl nickel (colorless)

Typical Applications

Carbonyl nickel powders are in powder metallurgy. They are also used to produce electrodes for batteries and fuel cells. Other uses include welding rods, high-temperature filters, binding agents, electronic materials, and hard metal binding agents

Classification

Carbonyl Nickel TSCA (SARA Title III) Status: Listed. Highly Hazardous
For further information, please call the EPA Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP) at 202-564-2902.
Carbonyl Nickel CAS Number: 13463-39-3
Carbonyl Nickel UN Number: 3089
Carbonyl Nickel is highly hazardous. Nickel carbonyl may be fatal if absorbed through the skin or, more likely, inhaled due to its high volatility. When inhaled, it decomposes, giving you a dose of carbon monoxide and depositing nickel in your lungs, where the toxicity comes from. It has an LC50 for a 30-minute exposure estimated at three ppm. It is immediately fatal at 30 ppm. The vapors of Ni(CO)₄ can auto-ignite.
