Molybdenum(IV) sulfide is widely used as a solid lubricant, including in aircraft engines. Polymers consisting of molybdenum(IV) sulfide, such as nylon, Teflon, and vespel, possess improved strength and reduced friction. Other applications are as an intermediate or co-catalyst for desulfurization in petrochemistry or as a catalyst in water electrolysis. It is useful as a filament material in many electrical applications. It is also used as a component of photoelectrochemical and microelectronics applications.
