Magnesium Fluoride (MgF₂)

Magnesium Fluoride (MgF₂), also referred to as Magnesium Difluoride, is a white crystalline alkaline earth metal salt utilized in optical devices. It has high transparency, a low refractive index (n≈1.36), a high threshold to laser-induced damage, high hardness, and excellent stability in hostile environments. In UV light, it fluoresces purple.

Typical Applications

Magnesium Fluoride is utilized in optical devices, including c-Si solar cells as a second−layer antireflection coating. Other optical uses include components in high-power lasers and as an evaporated coating onto aluminum to increase the Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) reflectance and retard oxidation. Other uses include as a Metallurgical (deoxidant) additive, finishing agent for titanium pigment, and fluorescent material for CRT and ceramics.
