Lanthanum(III) Oxide (La₂O₃)

Lanthanum(III) oxide, or Lanthana, is a white, water-insoluble solid. It can be dissolved in an acidic solution and is hygroscopic. Lanthanum oxide has p-type semiconducting properties. It has the largest bandgap of the rare earth metal oxides (4.3 eV), the lowest lattice energy, and a very high dielectric constant. Lanthana confers increased density, refractive index, and hardness to optical glasses.

Purities available are between 99.9% and 99.999%
Typical Applications

Lanthanum(III) oxide is used to make optical glasses, is an ingredient for manufacturing devices for piezoelectricity, galvanothermy, and thermoelectricity material, and is found in automobile exhaust-gas converters. It is also used in X-Ray imaging intensifying screens, phosphors, and dielectric and conductive ceramics.
