Iron (II, III) Oxide (Fe₃O₄)

Iron (II, III) Oxide (Fe₃O₄) is a black cubic crystal or amorphous powder that is insoluble in water, but soluble in acids that occur in nature as the mineral magnetite, the magnetic oxide of iron. Due to its main applications, Iron (II, III) Oxide is synthesized rather than extracted.

Various powder granulations are available down to submicron and nanoparticle sizing, and various grades are available between 98% and 99.999% purity.
Typical Applications

Iron (II, III) Oxide (Fe₃O₄) is used as a black pigment, referred to as Mars Black, in magnetic applications, polishing compounds, cosmetics, medicines, polymer, rubber, filler, building, construction, appliances, and magnetic inks. It is also widely used as a catalyst in the Haber process and the water-gas shift reaction and as a contrast agent in MRI scanning. It also has medical/pharmaceutical uses.
