Cadmium telluride finds applications as the semiconductor material in photovoltaics and infrared optical windows and is used in thin film solar cell production for cost-effective solar cell design. CdTe is an infrared optical material for optical windows and lenses applied in electro-optic modulators. It is alloyed with mercury (Hg) to make versatile infrared detector materials (HgCdTe). It can be doped with chlorine and used in radiation detection for x-rays, gamma rays, beta particles, and alpha particles.

Cadmium telluride is toxic, but only so if ingested, its dust inhaled, or if it is handled improperly). Once properly and securely captured and encapsulated, CdTe in manufacturing processes may be harmless. The toxicity is not solely due to the cadmium content.
