Bentonite / Montmorillonite Clay

Bentonite is an absorbent swelling clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite (a type of smectite) which can either be Sodium (Na)-montmorillonite or Calcium (Ca)-montmorillonite. Na-montmorillonite has a considerably greater swelling capacity than Ca-montmorillonite. As a swelling clay, bentonite can absorb large quantities of water, which increases its volume by up to a factor of eight.
Typical Chemical Analysis

Commercial Grade:
SiOâ‚‚= 61.3%
Al2O₃= 19.8%

Food Grade:
SiOâ‚‚ = 58-61%
CaO= 2.0-2.5%
Al₂O₃=21-22%
MgO= 3-4%
Naâ‚‚O= 3.7-4.2%
As= 5 ppm max.
Pb= 40 ppm max.

Typical Applications

Applications for Bentonite are in the drilling mud and groundwater sealants. Bentonite also is used to waterproof the walls of boreholes. It is also used as foundry sand, paints, fuller’s earth, bleaching clay, filtering agents, water impedance, inks, an additive to ceramic materials, and iron ore pelletizing. Bentonite is used as a suspending agent, gelling agent, or binder in pharmaceuticals, beverages, foods, cosmetics, and personal care products.

Bentonite CAS Number: 1302-78-9
Bentonites are aluminate silicate and can contain crystalline silica. The content varies widely from less than 1% to about 24%

Sustainable Qualities

Bentonite/Montmorillonite Clay is a naturally occurring mineral clay widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. It is considered sustainable because it is abundant and can be easily mined without causing significant damage to the environment. Additionally, it has a low environmental impact as it can be easily processed using simple mechanical methods, reducing the need for energy-intensive chemical processes.

Furthermore, Bentonite/Montmorillonite Clay is bio-based because it is composed primarily of naturally occurring minerals and contains no synthetic materials or harmful chemicals. It contributes to a circular economy because it can be recycled and reused multiple times, reducing waste and the need for additional raw materials. Its ability to absorb and remove impurities also makes it an ideal choice for wastewater treatment and soil remediation applications, further contributing to a sustainable and circular economy.
