Aluminum Carbide (Al₄C₃)

Aluminum Carbide (Al₄C₃) is a powder yellow-green in color with a hexagonal crystal structure that is a reducing agent. It decomposes in dilute acid and decomposes to produce CH4 in cold water. It has approximately the same hardness as topaz.
Typical Applications

Particles of aluminum carbide lower creep when added to an alloy. It is used as an abrasive in high-speed cutting tools and reduces metal oxides. It is used to prepare aluminum nitride and methane and has other applications in metallurgy. It can also act as a catalyst and drying agent.
