A photonic crystal (PC) is a new type of a manufactured material with refractive index periodically modulated on the scale of optical wavelengths. PCs have a number of peculiar features that can be utilized for realizing devices of novel or improved functionality. They exhibit photonic band gaps (PBGs), analogous to the electronic ones in semiconductors.
